Ben banishment reflects the effects that the environment has had on the Gladers. The maze has in a sense removed the aspects of humanity that some would argue makes us human. The maze at this point has taken an immense toll on the young boys and the need for survival has become the primary goal in life. One way the attempt to achieve this is through structure and order. Once Ben attempted to murder Thomas and repeatedly insisted that he knew him it became necessary to “banish” Ben to restore and maintain order. Although it was done in a barbaric way, Alby deemed as necessary to for Ben to die. Many would consider choosing to take the life of another as monstrous I think that under the circumstances it was just a way to survival. These boys were terrified and surrounded by a wall that had monstrous creatures inside that wanted blood. The only normalcy and civility these boys could find was in the glades and in the established rules made by those before them. Although they were teenagers who normally rebel against rules at all cost, these boys were trying to hold on their remaining humanistic characteristics built into their primal instincts.
